Defense ministry monitors South China Sea as US deploys navy
Defense official Zhong Shu-min

The U.S. Navy is deploying a navy fleet in the South China Sea. A Taiwan defense official said on Tuesday that they constantly monitor the region for any potential conflicts.

Washington said on Tuesday that the U.S. Navy will dispatch a warship in the South China Sea in response to China’s recent buildup of float islands in the area.

The decision is drawing international attention. Defense official Zhong Shu-ming said Taiwan has everything under surveillance.

"It is part of the U.S. Navy fleet’s routine to regularly cruise near the South China Sea," said Zhong.

"The Ministry of National Defense has put all air, sea and land activities in the area under constant surveillance. The National Armed Forces has also been on the alert and has prepared contingency plans for possible military conflicts."

The defense ministry’s 2015 report said that China, Vietnam and the Philippines have been in a race to create man-made islands and to claim sovereignty in neighboring seas.

China has deployed many vessels on top of its expanding navy fleet in nearby sea areas for alleged law enforcement activities. The South China Sea has become a hotbed for potential international conflicts.
