President Ma Ying-jeou is calling on Taiwan’s allies not to develop official ties with China. Ma was speaking Tuesday during his meeting with a delegation of their representatives to the United Nations.
The president said he is not opposed to allies building trade ties with China as Taiwan has also done the same thing. However, Ma said he hopes the business ties between China and Taiwan’s allies will not be turned into official diplomatic relations.
The president said Taiwan’s cooperation with its allies has been quite successful and has contributed a lot to their development.
Ma said Taiwan, as a responsible member of the international community, is willing and has the ability to make contributions. Taiwan has actively offered aid and humanitarian assistance to countries in need in recent years.
The president thanked the allies for speaking in favor of Taiwan at international events.
