Taiwan is holding a two-day international food summit in an effort to boost development of the Taiwanese restaurant industry. The event opened on Thursday. The economics ministry says it has invited restaurant experts from Germany and Japan to share innovations in restaurant operation.

Ministry official Jiang Wen-ruo said that Taiwan’s restaurants make an average of NT$410 billion (US$13 billion) every year. Jiang said the government is providing training to help restaurant businesses enter the international arena.

"The government is actively training businesses towards expanding, franchising and using technology because so many people value the importance of the food business," Jiang said. "We are encouraging restaurant owners to consider going global rather than just focusing on the Taiwanese market. You can only optimize business by globalizing."
