The foreign ministry has signed a memorandum to support EU efforts to combat pirate activities.

Taiwan’s representative in EU and Belgium and England’s International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network signed the Piracy Survivor Family Fund (PSFF) memorandum on October 21.

The PSFF was established in October 2014 by the United Nations. Its purpose is to provide support to piracy survivors and their family.
On Thursday, foreign ministry Director-General of European Affairs, Anna Kao called piracy a global issue.

Taiwan hopes to sign a multilateral agreement with other countries and to further cooperation on international maritime safety.

On the recommendation of the EU, Taiwan’s government has made a donation of US$166,000 to the US-based organization Oceans Beyond Piracy. The donation will fund the establishment of five maritime security centers on the Somali Coast.
