The US House of Representatives has introduced a resolution reaffirming the Taiwan Relations Act (TRA) as “the cornerstone of United States relations with Taiwan”.

The resolution was introduced by Representative Steve Chabot on Wednesday.

The TRA is a 1979 US law outlining the basis of the United States’ unofficial relationship with Taiwan. Provisions include the sale of weapons “of a defensive character” to Taiwan.

Chabot’s resolution recognizes Taiwan’s democratic achievements in the years since the TRA took effect. It also recognizes Taiwan’s strategic importance to the US. The resolution has been referred to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, where it is awaiting further action.
