Annual gay rights parade kicks off in Taipei

The annual Taiwan gay rights parade kicked off Saturday afternoon in Taipei.

Thousands of LGBT citizens and their supporters filled Ketagalan Boulevard in front of the Presidential Office with rainbow flags.

This year’s theme is “No Age Limit - Youth Autonomy and Liberating the Closet.” Organizers called on the participants to consider ways of breaking legal boundaries and other restrictions while exploring how age and sexual orientation can combine to injure the self-esteem of LGBT people.

Several officials from the European Economic Trade Office showed their support by participating in the event, which is one of the biggest gay rights parades in Asia. Dignitaries in attendance included representatives from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain.

On Saturday, opposition leader and presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen uploaded a video on her Facebook voicing her support for gay marriage.

On Wednesday, Taiwan hosted Asia’s largest LGBT-themed conference with 300 participants from 30 countries.
