Taiwan’s government has honored more than 10,000 people for their contributions during the Second Sino-Japanese War.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the victory, and the end of Japanese rule over the island of Taiwan.
President Ma on Monday met with the grandson of one of the honorees: former Navy Vice Admiral Yang Hsuan-cheng. Yang participated in the Cairo Conference in 1943 and helped pave the way for the addition of the Penghu Islands to Republic of China territory following the war.
President Ma said that the government has awarded people for more than just contributions on the field of combat. He said that medals are awarded to average citizens, too.
