KMT: Ma-Xi meeting a watershed moment for cross-strait relations
KMT party spokesman Yang Wei-chung

The ruling KMT is hailing an upcoming meeting between President Ma Ying-jeou and Chinese leader Xi Jinping as a watershed moment in cross-strait relations. On Wednesday, KMT spokesman Yang Wei-chung outlined the party’s hopes for the meeting.

“I believe the Ma-Xi meeting is a breakthrough moment for cross-strait relations. From the working to resolve cross-strait differences and peacefully developing relations, we are now cooperating in a mutually beneficial way," said Yang. "I think the meeting will mark the beginning of a new stage where we cooperate in ways that are helpful to both sides. As long as it is beneficial to the Taiwanese people and Taiwan’s peaceful development, we are pleased to see this change.”

Yang said that the development of cross-strait relations is a task that the KMT is especially suited to undertake. He said that DPP presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen has stated to “keep the status quo” without giving any concrete strategies. Yang said that she must explain her plan to the public and to neighboring countries if she decides not to continue the KMT’s current strategies.
