Chu: Maintaining peace and resolving disputes in South China Sea top goals
KMT presidential candidate Eric Chu
KMT presidential candidate Eric Chu says that maintaining peace and resolving disputes in the South China Sea are Taiwan’s primary goals.

Chu was speaking at an international press conference Thursday. The conference comes amid heightened tensions in the South China Sea, which is subject to claims by Taiwan, Mainland China, and several other countries.

Chu said that Taiwan will continue to promote President Ma Ying-jeou’s South China Sea Peace Initiative. The initiative calls on all claimants to put aside their differences and work to jointly develop the area’s resources.

Chu also spoke about the recent decision by an international tribunal in The Hague to take on Philippine claims in the South China Sea. Chu said he does not believe that arbitration will resolve disputes in the area, and said that all parties should sit down and resolve differences through dialogue.
