Foreign Minister David Lin says that the upcoming Ma-Xi talks will facilitate Taiwan’s participation in this month’s APEC Senior Official Meeting.
Lin was speaking during a legislative meeting on Thursday. He said that the meeting will make the APEC meeting scheduled for mid-November run more smoothly.
"No change will be made to our plans for the APEC meeting. The former vice president, Vincent Siew, will represent the country at this year’s Senior Official Meeting, [which] should be smoother," Lin said. "It’s a meeting for multilateral cooperation. We expect to interact with countries including the US, Japan, Singapore, and Mainland China."
Lin said the Ma-Xi talks will focus on cross-strait peace and stability. He said that Washington welcomes the meeting between the two leaders.
"The State Department views the meeting in a very positive way; the White House holds a positive attitude towards peaceful cross-strait development. This is helpful not only for the both sides of the Strait, but also for the peace of the region," Lin said.
Lin said the government has emphasized that Ma will not sign any agreement or make any joint announcement with Xi during the meeting.
