DPP presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen says the meeting between President Ma Ying-jeou and Chinese leader Xi Jinping is not a historic moment. Tsai made the statement in a Facebook post on Saturday morning.
Tsai said that the meeting will only be called a historic event if it brings positive changes to cross-strait ties and shows respect for democratic values. Otherwise, Tsai said the meeting is simply a “news event.”
Tsai said she hopes that the meeting will help maintain the status quo across the Taiwan Strait, including Taiwan’s freedom, dignity and democracy. Tsai said that no political preconditions should be set for ensuring cross-strait peace and stability and that two sides are on an equal footing.
Tsai said the Taiwanese people will be disappointed if President Ma is unable to meet these expectations.
