A top Chinese envoy Zhang Zhijun says China will not interfere in Taiwan’s presidential elections. Zhang was speaking at a press conference in Singapore following the meeting between the two leaders across the Taiwan Strait.

Zhang is the head of China’s Taiwan Affairs Office. He said China is concerned about whether cross-strait ties are moving in a right direction in the future.

Taiwan is scheduled to hold its presidential elections on January 16th. Several opinion polls show that KMT’s presidential candidate Eric Chu is still trailing far behind Democratic Progressive Party’s (DPP) Tsai Ing-wen.

Meanwhile, Legislature President Wang Jin-pyng said he believes that the meeting between President Ma Ying-jeou and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping will help promote cross-strait peace and boost support for the KMT candidate.
