EPA warns of poor air quality in central Taiwan

The Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) is warning of extremely poor air quality in parts of central Taiwan. The index for fine particulate matter smaller than 2.5 micrometers (known as PM2.5) hit the hazardous level of 10 (out of 10) on the scale.

The areas which recorded a 10 on that scale include Shalu and Xitun districts in Taichung, and Lunbei in Yunlin County. Many other areas in Taichung City, and Changhua and Yunlin counties recorded level nine readings on that scale. The EPA said that the poor conditions were caused in part by a lack of wind.

The EPA is encouraging people to wear face masks when going outdoors. It said that a PM2.5 concentration above a level seven is severe enough to cause tangible discomfort and health problems.

The EPA is advising the elderly and people with chronic lung or heart disease to avoid prolonged or strenuous physical activity outdoors. It was also advising people to wash their hands regularly, clear their nasal passages, and keep windows closed while the air quality is poor.
