The Central Epidemic Command Center has released updated figures on the ongoing dengue fever outbreak in southern Taiwan. The figures show that the number of dengue fever cases reported in Kaohsiung since the beginning of summer broke the 10,000 mark on Thursday.
The outbreak remains contained to the southern cities of Tainan and Kaohsiung, with sporadic cases emerging in nearby Pingtung County.
More than 30,000 cases have been reported so far this year. Kaohsiung, with more than 10,000 cases, now accounts for around a third of the total, while most of the remaining 20,000 cases have originated in Tainan.
Friday’s figures show that while the outbreak is losing momentum in Tainan, it is continuing at full strength in Kaohsiung.
The confirmed death toll from this year’s outbreak of dengue fever now sits at 150. Dengue fever is also the suspected cause of 28 other deaths, four of them on Thursday.
