Taiwan broadens space efforts with US, to launch satellites next year

Taiwan is set to launch six satellites next year. That’s part of an ongoing joint program with NASA and other space organizations in the United States.

Taiwan’s National Space Organization (NSPO) began working on the programs over 20 years ago. The first three programs -- Formosat-1, 2 and 3 -- used US launch vehicles. Formsat-3 was also the first US-Taiwan cooperative space mission. That involved launching six satellites which provided global weather coverage. The latest program, Formsat-7, will replace Formsat-3 in its missions.

The United States’ representative to Taiwan – American Institute in Taiwan Director Kin Moy -- visited the National Space Organization on Monday to hear about the latest developments.

Moy said he looked forward to the successful launch of the six satellites next year. He said the United States is looking forward to expanding its space cooperation with Taiwan in order to provide scientific benefits to both economies.
