Ruling Kuomintang (KMT)’s presidential candidate Eric Chu said on Tuesday that the time is ripe for a meeting between him and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Chu said if he is elected president, he hopes for a win-win situation in cross-strait relations and further development in the international arena, industries and education for both sides.
“To continue the cross-strait policy, especially the policy upheld by the KMT, I feel that the time is ripe for a Chu-Xi meeting after the recent Ma-Xi meeting. If I were to be elected [president] next year, I should be able to push for a Chu-Xi meeting,” said Chu.
Chu said he has heard that Indonesia would be happy to arrange the meeting for the cross-strait leaders. He said any place is appropriate. Chu said a regular meeting for leaders between the two sides should become a trend. If cross-strait relations were to grow closer, an invitation for the Chinese leader to visit Taiwan would be a positive development.
Chu congratulates Democratic Progressive Party’s presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen on her announcement of her running mate. As for his running mate, Chu said that he will choose someone with political experience but not a person from the financial sector. Chu said he will make an announcement once a decision is made.
