KMT presidential candidate Eric Chu has called for changes to his party’s domestic policies in an interview with The Washington Post.
In the interview, published Tuesday, Chu said that misguided steps in areas such as education reform and capital gains tax are behind his party’s poor performance in polls. Chu said that KMT domestic policies have not been in line with public opinion, something he said must be changed.
At the same time, Chu said that the KMT has not made similar mistakes in its cross-strait policies. He said that the idea of maintaining the “status quo” proposed by his chief opponent, Tsai Ing-wen, was originally a KMT policy. He said that if elected, he will pursue further cooperation with China in economic matters and on the international stage.
During the interview, Chu also discussed his impressions of Chinese leader Xi Jinping, the implementation of “One Country, Two Systems” in Hong Kong, and Taiwan’s need for improved military “software” and quality arms.
