Representatives from 32 universities have signed an agreement on setting up standards for evaluating Chinese-language academic journals.
The representatives met in Hong Kong on Wednesday to sign the agreement. The universities represented are located in Taiwan, Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau.
The list of universities that are party to the agreement include some of the most prestigious in the Chinese-speaking world- schools like National Taiwan University, Peking University, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
The goal of the agreement is to provide an alternative to English-based standards for evaluating academic journals. At a press conference after the signing, National Taiwan University President Yang Pan-Chyr said he hopes that work on establishing the standards will be completed next year.
