32 universities from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau and China have signed a letter of intent on compiling a list of Chinese academic journals. The goal of the list will be to promote Chinese-language scholarship around the world.
National Taiwan University President Yang Pan-chyr said Friday that Chinese-speaking people account for one sixth of the world’s population. Yang said that there is much Chinese-language academic writing on topics such as Taoism, calligraphy, and Confucianism. He said that this writing loses meaning when translated into English.
“In order to promote Chinese culture across the world, you really need to publish Chinese-language academic journals on subjects such as humanities and social science globally instead of simply translating articles into English," said Yang, "Our goal is to establish an evaluation standard in line with the international one. This will allow Chinese-language academic journals to be evaluated and published on a global scale. The plan should take off within a year.”
Yang said the universities will work together to establish standards on writing format, evaluation, review committee systems, and citation guides. He said this will allow the journals to be evaluated and recognized on an international scale.
