Taiwan raises travel alert for Belgium to yellow
Security boosted in Brussels

Taiwan has elevated the travel alert for Belgium to “yellow”, the second level in a four-color system.

The foreign ministry made the announcement on Sunday, urging Taiwanese nationals to be on the alert while traveling there. In a statement, the ministry urged people to reconsider non-essential visits to Belgium at a time when that country is under the threat of terrorist attacks following the attacks on Paris just over a week ago.

The travel alert came after the Belgian government raised the terror alert in Brussels to its highest level -- level 4 – on Saturday, warning citizens and travelers that the capital city is under "serious and immediate threat."

In Taipei, the foreign ministry issued a reminder to Taiwanese people who are now in Belgium and neighboring Luxemburg to be on the alert and avoid lingering in public spaces like shopping malls, airports and train stations that are usually crowded, or taking enclosed forms of mass transit such as metro trains.
