Taiwan is not developing edible GMOs: COA

The Council of Agriculture (COA) says that Taiwan is not developing edible GMOs (genetically modified organisms). The word came on Monday following the United States Food and Drug Administration’s announcement that it had approved the sale of genetically modified salmon.

The FDA says that the salmon could hit the market in the United States in about two years’ time.

COA Deputy Minister James Sha said Monday that the main goal behind developing GMOs is to reduce disease and combat the adverse effects of irregular weather patterns. He said that’s in order to speed up growth and increase food sources.

However, Sha said that there are concerns about the possible consequences of developing GMOs. He said that more time is needed before they are readily accepted in Taiwan.

Right now, Sha said, the only animal and plant GMOs that Taiwan is developing are ornamental fluorescent fish and orchids. He said Taiwan’s current policy is clear: the focus is on breeding plants and animals. There is currently no development of edible GMOs.
