The Legislature has put off a scheduled revision of a bill that would give Mainland students studying in Taiwan the same healthcare coverage given to foreign students.
KMT legislator Lai Shi-pao said Friday that the legislature has decided not to deal with the bill partly because the Taiwan Solidarity Union has threatened a boycott and partly because of the DPP’s suggestion that the bill be merged with another healthcare bill.
Education minister Wu Se-hwa responded to the announcement by saying that he is disappointed the bill will not pass in the current legislative session.
"We still maintain the same basic attitude. All foreign students should be treated equally," Wu said. "[Our concern] is based on considerations of education and harmony on our campuses, and we still hope this matter can be taken care of."
Wu urged the legislature to pass the bill soon.
