Opposition DPP presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen and her running mate, Chen Chien-jen have formally registered their candidacy.
At the Central Election Commission on Friday, Tsai said she understands that her responsibilities are to take care of the Taiwanese people, to push for reform, and to strengthen democracy.
"My team and I have been getting ready for four years to put our names down on the registry. During those years, the Taiwanese people and I have been through all kinds of challenges that have faced this country," Tsai said. "The opportunity for change will not wait for us. This country needs a government that has boldness, executive power, communication skills, and a vision for the future. It should be a government that can lead Taiwan towards reform and out of its difficult situation."
Tsai said she will build a government with the people as at its base. She said she is determined to let Taiwan’s democracy, diversity and creativity become symbol of “new Asian values”. She said she wants to invite Taiwanese people to join in the reform process and become their own masters. She said she wants to bring back the honor that the country deserves and allow the Taiwanese people to be full of hope and pride.
