The number of countries and areas that have granted Taiwanese citizens visa free status has increased from 153 to 158. That’s the word from the foreign ministry Tuesday.

The foreign ministry said Ethiopia, Lebanon and Mauritania have granted Taiwanese passport holders landing visas. United Arab Emirates and Zambia have also made electronic visas available to the Taiwanese.

The foreign ministry has also reached agreements on the reciprocal recognition of driver’s licenses with a total of 85 countries and areas. Under the agreements, those with a Taiwanese driver’s license will be able to get a local license without having to take the written or the road test.

They include frequently visited countries such as Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, France, Italy, six states and two territories in Australia, six provinces in Canada as well as 15 states and Puerto Rico of the United States.
