Taiwan’s national defense representative in the US, David Yang, says that Taiwan’s will continue to build its own submarines while also purchasing submarines from the US.
Yang was speaking Tuesday at a seminar hosted by “Project 2049 Institute”, an American think tank focused on security issues in the Asia-Pacific region. He said he is fully confident that Taiwan is capable of building its own submarines even if the plan to purchase US-built submarines falls through in the future.
Yang said that Taiwan has welcomed the collaboration of US defense companies in its effort to build its own submarines. He said that US companies have been in frequent contact with Taiwan about its submarine building project.
Project 2049 Institute Director Mark Stokes said that Taiwan is capable of building its own submarines. He said the key concern is how advanced the internal technology in Taiwan-built submarines can be.
