Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Eleanor Wang says that a US-Taiwan anti-terror screening agreement signed in 2011 is beneficial to both sides.
Wang was speaking during an interview on Thursday.
She said that claims by Taiwan’s Next Magazine that the anti-terror agreement had been a secret. She said that the National Immigration Agency had announced the agreement in its annual report for 2012.
Wang said that while the agreement was a prerequisite to Taiwan’s inclusion in the US Visa Waiver Program, the agreement is also helpful to Taiwan because it strengthens the exchange of information on terrorists between the two sides.
Wang said that this shared information is important to improving Taiwan’s security.
Meanwhile, the foreign ministry says that it will pay close attention to the progress of the Visa Waiver Program Security Enhancement Act, which is currently being deliberated in the US Senate. The ministry says that Taiwan will cooperate with strengthened US security measures and explain these measures to the public.
