Finance Minister Chang Sheng-ford says that Taiwan’s exports in November showed no signs of recovery.
In a telephone interview on Sunday, Chang said that even though the end of the year traditionally brings a bump in exports, Taiwan registered a double-digit fall in exports for November over the same month last year. That’s the tenth consecutive monthly decline, and the fifth consecutive month registering a double-digit drop. That’s the worst performance since the global financial crisis of 2009.
Chang said he did not know when the market was expected to make a comeback.
The finance minister said that there is too much uncertainty in the global market, as a result of things like increasing numbers of terrorist attacks. He said that’s had a dampening impact on the consumer and tourism markets.
The finance minister said that although the iPhone 6S has hit the market, sales have not helped stimulate output for Taiwanese suppliers. Exports of tablet computers and other electronics have also continued to decline, affecting Taiwan’s overall performance in exports.
