The KMT legislative caucus says the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) should take steps so that Chinese students studying in Taiwan can be included in the national health insurance program. That was the word from the deputy secretary of the KMT legislative caucus, Wang Yu-min, on Monday.
Wang’s comments came after DPP Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen said last Friday that Chinese students should be included in the program along with all foreign students.
Wang called on the DPP to immediately take action and not boycott revisions to the National Health Insurance Act.
“Now that Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen has voiced support for the inclusion of Chinese students, the DPP’s legislative caucus must stop boycotting the revision," said Wang.
"We also call on Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen to take action now. As long as we revise Article 22 of the statutes governing the relations between people across the Taiwan Strait and change the wording from ‘residency’ to ‘stopover’ for Chinese students, they can be included immediately, as it will match Article 9 of the National Health Insurance Act.”
Meanwhile, DPP lawmaker Tsai Chi-chang said the DPP has never opposed the issue. However he said that while Chinese students can be included in the program, they must pay full premiums.
