The foreign ministry said Tuesday that as of January 1, 2016, Taiwanese passport holders will be able to use the English spelling of their names in their mother tongue in the foreign name column. Currently only English spellings in the Mandarin Chinese pronunciation of their names are allowed.
Starting 2016, people can use the English spelling from the Minnan, Hakka, Cantonese, Shanghai or Shandong dialects.
