President Ma Ying-jeou says that there are no political motives behind the sharing of historical documents stored in Taiwan with Chinese scholars. Ma was speaking at the National Archives Administration on Friday.
Ma said that the goal of sharing documents is to give Chinese scholars accurate historical data for research and restore forgotten periods of history.
Ma said he mentioned sharing historical materials with China in his National Day address this year. He said that many Chinese scholars now come to Taiwan to conduct historical studies.
"Many groups of Chinese scholars already came here to do research. The results have been good, because the materials many people get in Mainland China are different from the materials we provide here," Ma said. "This means that diligent researchers gain accurate knowledge here. It’s not a bad thing. There are no political factors involved. It’s purely to restore a forgotten period of history."
The president thanked archivists for preserving the country’s history, which he said is a significant foundation for a country’s development.
