Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) Minister Wei Kuo-yen says that Taiwan can learn from the energy mixes of other countries.
Wei was speaking Saturday upon his return to Taiwan from France. He had been leading Taiwan's delegation to the UN climate change conference in Paris. Wei was Taiwan's first EPA minister to take part in a summit held by the Council of Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Wei said he told the conference that Taiwan hopes to achieve a 50% cut in CO2 emissions by 2030. He said that making such a proactive move would not be completely unfeasible.
Wei said that every country has its own energy mix. He also said that nuclear power remains a sensitive topic. But he said that Taiwan will have a better understanding of international standards after a final draft of the climate deal reached in Paris is finalized. He said that there can then be a discussion on Taiwan's energy mix.
Wei also said that the summit did not produce an agreement on curbing rising global temperatures. That’s despite the fact that average global temperatures have already risen by around one degree Celsius.
