A total of 103 new dengue fever cases were reported on Saturday in Taiwan bringing the total number of cases since May to 41,732.
The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) said Sunday that 94 of the cases were reported in the southern city of Kaohsiung. The neighboring city of Tainan, which was the original epicenter of the outbreak, reported two new cases.
The outbreak of the mosquito-borne disease in Kaohsiung has shown signs that it is easing. But officials are warning residents to stay vigilant, since temperatures are not cold enough to prevent the breeding of dengue-carrying mosquitoes.
About 95 percent of the patients infected this year have recovered, but 195 people (112 in Tainan, 81 in Kaohsiung and two in Pingtung) have died of dengue fever since the start of the summer. That’s according to the latest statistics, released on Dec. 8.
