Environmental Protection Minister Wei Kuo-yen says that he hopes Taiwan will derive 14% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030.
Wei said that if Taiwan does nothing to alter its energy mix, it will be emitting 428 million tons of greenhouse gases annually by 2030. He said that Taiwan must make efforts including adjusting industries and increasing energy efficiency to halve annual emissions by that date.
Wei said that one important area of effort will be increasing the proportion of Taiwan’s energy supplied from renewable sources. He said that Taiwan must also develop a renewable energy nameplate capacity of around 30%.
Wei said that these figures are based on surveys, including appraisals of Taiwan’s solar and wind energy output. He said that the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) will review the details of the Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction and Management Act. At the same time, Wei said that EPA will push forward the Energy Bureau’s greenhouse gas reduction plan.
This will encourage the development of low-carbon energy, low-carbon technology, green transport, and a carbon trading market in Taiwan. The EPA will also reevaluate Taiwan’s energy mix once every five years.
