Taiwan friendly towards Muslims: Ma
President Ma Ying-jeou says that Taiwan is friendly towards Muslims. Ma was speaking Monday at the opening ceremony of the 16th Regional Islamic Da’wah Council of Southeast Asia and the Pacific (RISEAP) in Taipei.

The council is the highest Islamic leadership organization in the Asia- Pacific region, with members from 23 countries. This is the first time that the organization has held its annual meeting in Taiwan.

Ma said that the constitution guarantees freedom of religion. Ma said he is happy that Islam is able to develop in Taiwan in such a friendly environment.

The president extended his welcome to attendees.

"We hope that when you return to your home countries, you will tell your friends and family members that Taiwan is very beautiful and is a Muslim-friendly country. Our door is always open, and I can assure you a warm welcome," Ma said.

Ma said the number of Muslims in Taiwan has increased over the past few years with the arrival of migrant workers from Indonesia. Taiwan was the 10th most popular destination for Muslim travelers this year.
