The government will review China’s investment plans for Taiwan’s IC industry based on the interests of national security and economic development. That’s the word from Cabinet Spokesman Sun Lih-chyun on Tuesday.
Sun was referring to the Beijing-based Tsinghua Unigroup's plan to invest in three Taiwanese firms that test and package semiconductors.
Sun said while the government has opened up Taiwan’s IC testing and packaging providers to Chinese investors, that doesn’t mean all investment projects will be approved. Sun also said the government has yet to open up IC design.
He spoke on investment projects to be reviewed. Sun said, "The opinion to be made by related government agencies about each and every investment project will be submitted to and [reviewed] by the Investment Commission. From what I understand, the commission makes decisions based on a consensus. It’s an issue concerning national security and economic development, so I hope the [public] won’ t politicize it too much.”
Many people have been discussing the Chinese conglomerate’s plan to invest in Taiwan’s IC industry. Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen is concerned about the threat that China would have on Taiwan’s industry once it acquires key technologies. Earlier, Tsai said allowing Tsinghua Unigroup to make inroads into Taiwan’s industry is not okay now.
