Taiwanese tennis player Hsieh Su-wei and her Chinese doubles partner Peng Shuai are going to be ranked the number 1 women’s doubles players in the world. Hsieh is the first Taiwanese player to achieve this rank in doubles. The team is also only the 10th in history to be ranked first at the same time.
Hsieh is currently ranked second in women’s doubles and will catch up to her partner Peng next week.
Hsieh said on Friday that it’s great to be able to be ranked first in the world. She also said she’s proud of her partner Peng who achieved the ranking before her. Peng said she is very happy to be able to share the top rank with Hsieh.
WTA Chairwoman Stacey Allaster said they are a great team and a great example for fans in the Asia-Pacific region.
Their 11 WTA doubles titles include one in 2008 (Bali), three in 2009 (Sydney, Rome and Beijing), five in 2013 (Rome, Wimbledon, Cincinnati, Guangzhou and the WTA Championships), and two in 2014 (Doha and Indian Wells) so far. Peng said their goal this year is to get into the finals of the Singapore WTA Championships.
