Taiwan’s presidential candidates are set to face off in their first televised debate on December 27th. The ruling Kuomintang’s (KMT) candidate, Eric Chu, said Sunday that it’s his first time participating in such a debate. Chu said he does not have as much experience in that area as the other two candidates.
The Democratic Progressive Party’s (DPP) Tsai Ing-wen and the People First Party’s (PFP) James Soong have both previously run for president and participated in debates.
The KMT’s Eric Chu said that he would clearly explain his economic policies. His comments followed a call from one of Taiwan’s biggest tycoons, Foxconn Chairman Terry Gou, who said that Taiwan’s biggest problem is the economy. Gou said that the three presidential candidates need to set specific economic goals, rather than simply talking about “small pleasures.”
Chu said that he would come prepared for the debates, and would talk about not just the economy and cross-strait relations, but all of the issues that are of interest to the public.
