The controversy over a new high school history curriculum has been mostly resolved. That’s according to the education ministry.
National Taiwan Normal University history professor Lin Man-houng is one of the members of an advisory board for the new curriculum. She said on Monday that board members were trying to use neutral terms to describe history when the controversy emerged. She said the board agreed unanimously that history should not be clouded by “personal feelings and views.”
Lin said that under that guiding principle, the board had resolved 16 controversial items. However, she said more discussion was needed when it comes to the controversy over whether Taiwan was “occupied” or “ruled” by Japan from 1895 to 1945.
Meanwhile, Education Minister Wu Se-hua said that while there are different perspectives on Taiwan’s history, professionalism trumps any argument about the description of historical facts.
