KMT presidential candidate Eric Chu says that DPP candidate Tsai Ing-wen is being provocative by not recognizing the 1992 Consensus. The consensus is an agreement where both sides agree on One China, but each side maintaining its own interpretation.
Tsai spoke to business leaders on Tuesday about how she plans to maintain the status quo of cross strait peace and development. She said that if elected, she will not seek to provoke or surprise the Mainland.
But Chu said Wednesday that the 1992 Consensus has been the basis of cross-strait ties and agreements.
"But the problem is when you don’t recognize the 1992 Consensus, that is a provocation in itself. In contrast, we’ve been able to peacefully develop ties on the basis of the 1992 Consensus," said Chu. "I have said that we are looking for a positive win-win relationship, starting with peaceful development in this generation moving on to a cooperative, mutually beneficial relationship in the next generation. I think Tsai’s position is a provocative one that will probably lead cross-strait relations in a backwards direction."
Twenty four days remain before the presidential election. KMT polls show that Chu is now only 9.5% behind Tsai. Chu says that as the KMT forges unity, more and more people will back its policies.
