The US National Academy of Inventors has admitted Professor Calvin Hu of University of California, Berkeley into its ranks. The academy admitted Hu on Tuesday in light of his contributions to the advancement of semiconductor technology.

Hu is a professor of electrical engineering and computer science. He served for four years as chief technology officer at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Inc., the world’s largest semiconductor foundry.

Hu has been praised as “the father of the 3-D transistor” and a “microelectronics visionary” for his inventions. These include FinFET transistors and the BSIM integrated circuit design. The latter became the international standard model for IC design and production.
