Ma calls for stronger anti-espionage measures

President Ma Ying-jeou says that despite warmer cross-strait ties, Taiwan should still take measures to prevent Chinese espionage. Ma was speaking on Thursday.

Ma said that while cross-strait relations have improved over the last seven years, national security and protection against espionage remain challenges for Taiwan.  Ma cited the case of Chinese army captain Zheng Xiaojiang.

"On one hand, we have proven that we have not been lax. On the other hand, we see that the Chinese Communists will go to any length to infiltrate Taiwan [with spies]. Our military needs to be especially cautious," Ma said. "China has two main ways of getting what it wants. One, it’s willing to spend money, and two, it seizes on the weak points of others, whether that is money or sex. We need to be extra careful."

Ma said he hopes that the Investigation Bureau will become more effective with the help of advanced technology.
