The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says that both iodized and non-iodized salt sold on the market must be clearly labeled in the future. The FDA made the announcement Friday.
Packaged salt products will be required to have a label that says iodine is a nutrient though it is not recommended for those with hyperthyroidism and those under radioiodine therapy.
The new rule will take effect on July 1, 2016.
Health Promotion Administration Director-General Chiou Shu-ti says that iodine deficiency is a common problem in Taiwan. A government survey conducted in 2013 shows that 51.2% of the public have urinary iodine concentrations below levels suggested by the World Health Organization.
Chiou says that iodine is a nutrient, not a food additive. She also said that iodine deficiency during pregnancy may have a negative impact on babies’ mental development.
Chiou said that besides eating seaweed, the best way to get enough iodine is by eating iodized salt, though intake should not exceed six grams per day.
