Foreign Minister David Lin says that Japan has agreed to talks on the issue of Taiwanese “comfort women” forced into sex slavery during WWII.
Lin was speaking Wednesday, two days after Japan reached an agreement with South Korea on its “comfort women”. Lin’s announcement also comes one day after President Ma Ying-jeou demanded that Japan offer an apology and compensation for Taiwan’s own “comfort women”.
Lin said that Taiwan and Japan are likely to begin talks in early January.
He said that representatives from a variety of government agencies and private groups will meet on January 6. The goal of the meeting will be to develop a consensus on the Taiwanese side. Representatives of the remaining Taiwanese “comfort women” will be among those in attendance.
It is estimated that four former Taiwanese “comfort women” remain. Some of them are now over 90 years old.
