A new hotline connecting officials in Taiwan and Mainland China is now open.
Zhang Zhijun, the Mainland’s top official in charge of cross-strait affairs, made the first call using the hotline Wednesday morning. He spoke with Andrew Hsia, head of Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council (MAC). Hsia is Taiwan’s highest ranked cross-strait policy official.
The presidential office said the hotline signifies an important step forward in establishing mechanisms for cross-strait relations. It also said that the new hotline is a concrete achievement of last month’s meeting between President Ma Ying-jeou and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
