Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Minister Andrew Hsia says that the government will maintain its policy of “no unification, no independence, no use of force” and the cross-strait status quo.
Hsia was giving a New Year’s speech Friday on the MAC’s Facebook page. Hsia said the government has been promoting systemic cross-strait negotiations and exchanges on all levels on the basis on the 1992 Consensus. The 1992 Consensus refers to a tacit agreement reached between Taiwan and China in 1992. Under the agreement, both sides agree that there is only one China, though each side is allowed to maintain its own interpretation of what that means.
Hsia said that cross-strait relations have seen important developments in the past year, including the meeting of leaders from both sides for the first time in 66 years, and the signing of multiple agreements.
Hsia said that the legislature will work with government agencies to address disagreements on the Economic Corporation Framework Agreement. He also said that the legislature and government agencies will work to see Taiwan and Mainland China establish representative offices in each other’s territory.
