Some 2.4 million cars flooded the nation’s highways on Sunday morning, with holidaymakers headed home at the end of the New Year holidays. Highway authorities warned of heavier traffic later in the day, urging travelers to take mass transportation when possible.
Authorities say that Highway Number 5 began experiencing delays on Sunday morning. That route sees a lot of traffic because it’s a smaller highway linking Taipei with the popular northeast coast, via Taiwan’s longest tunnel – the Hsuehshan Tunnel. Highways Number 1 and 3 also saw speeds slowing to under 40 km/h in the afternoon, particularly in parts of northern Taiwan.
