The state-run Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) has unveiled a liberalization plan that will make it similar to a private sector business.
At an event marking its 70th anniversary on Monday, Taipower said it has decided to set up different departments for: wind and thermal power, nuclear power, transmission and supply of electricity, as well as sales and distribution.
Taipower says the goal is to set up a financially independent system for every power plant in Taiwan in order to better control costs.
The liberalization plan is the brainchild of Economics Minister John Deng. He talked about the idea on Monday at the Taipower’s 70th anniversary celebrations.
“By setting up the departments, Taipower will be more efficient and more capable of providing the electricity needed by the local industries and the public," said Deng.
"Also, the plan will enable [Taipower] to be better equipped to deal with the situation after liberalization," he said.
Deng said, though, that Taipower has a long way to go before it can be fully liberalized, and that more discussions are needed.
