The Ministry of Education and the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) will meet to discuss regulations on ads for Chinese universities in Taiwan.
The move comes after the Beijing Institute of Technology posted a recruiting ad for teaching staff in a Taiwanese magazine this week. The MAC said the law governing interactions between the people of Taiwan and China only allows six types of cross-strait business activity. These include tourism, civil aviation, and transportation. Education is not on the list, though it is not clear if it falls into the category of “others”.
Education minister Wu Se-hwa said Friday that it is good to see Taiwan’s PhD students being recognized around the word for their high quality education. He said the education ministry is searching for more information on the question of whether the ad was legal and will discuss the issue further with the MAC.
