It’s “Super Sunday,” the last Sunday before the people of Taiwan head to the polls next Saturday, January 16th. Voters will choose a new president, with the current President Ma Ying-jeou set to step down following his second and final term in office.
With less than a week remaining before election day, all three presidential candidates and President Ma Ying-jeou himself were in the southern city of Tainan to drum up support.
The ruling party candidate – Eric Chu from the Kuomintang (KMT) – and his main opposition rival – the Democratic Progressive Party’s (DPP) Tsai Ing-wen paraded through the streets of Tainan on Sunday morning. The third candidate – James Soong from the People First Party (PFP) – arrived in Tainan in the afternoon to pray at the city’s popular Chenghuang (City God) Temple.
Meanwhile, President Ma was in Tainan campaigning for a local legislative candidate.
