Taiwan’s display industry looks to bounce back in Q2

Taiwan’s flat panel display industry is looking to bounce back in the second quarter this year, after losses in 2015. That’s according to analyst Tseng Chun-chou, from the Taiwan Institute of Economic Research (TIER), on Monday.

Tseng said Taiwan’s flat panel display industry faces strong competition from Korean name brands in the high-end market. In the mid-range market, he said, Chinese electronics manufacturers tend to support locally made panels. Those two trends have led to lower demand for Taiwanese brands.

Despite those challenges, Tseng said that the price war in the mid-range market will not last, and that demand will increase in the second quarter of 2016. He said that will enable Taiwan’s industry to bounce back.

"When prices fall to a certain level, for instance, if 50 inch TV prices fall to around NT$10,000, it will create new demand," said Tseng.

"People would then want to replace their 32-inch TVs with 50-inch TVs," he said. "They would want to upgrade [at that price]."
